3 Qualities We Love in a DSP

Direct Support Professionals, or DSPs, are the backbone of our work at RISE Services, Inc. Oregon. From helping people they support plan and cook meals, coaching individuals applying for a job, and supporting new Host Home families, we could never have transformed the lives of so many individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD) without our DSPs. It doesn’t necessarily take a highly-trained or experienced professional to be a DSP with RISE Services, Inc. Oregon. However, if you do need further instruction, we will ensure you receive the necessary training and support to succeed in your role. If you possess caring and supportive qualities like the ones listed below, we encourage and invite you to apply for a DSP position with us today.

Qualities We Love in a DSP

1. Creativity

One of the things we are most proud of is the individualized care we provide for each person we support. We don’t believe in trying to squeeze a square peg into a round hole when delivering our services and strategies. It takes flexibility, resourcefulness, and creativity to offer the most effective support to our members. We work with each individual and their family in a unique way to meet their lifestyle, desires, and needs. If you can utilize various tools and resources, share ideas and perspectives with your team, and occasionally think out of the box, you may be a great addition to our DSP team.

2. Compassion

Our DSPs work with individuals who may have challenging behaviors, traumatic backgrounds, and complex disability needs. Compassion is a must if you plan to work at RISE Services, Inc. Oregon. We use a person-centered approach when assisting individuals living with disabilities and providing the highest quality care possible. This may include assisting with daily hygienic needs, encouraging positive behaviors, and collaborating with other members of their care team. With a compassionate attitude, individuals with I/DD are in a position to make positive choices that can lead to personal growth and increased independence.

3. Support

Understanding your role as one of supporting children and adults with I/DD rather than making decisions for them is what makes RISE Services, Inc. Oregon different from other service-based agencies for individuals with I/DD. Our goal is to help maximize their autonomy. One way we do this is by teaching valuable life skills, such as grocery shopping, medication management, housekeeping, public transportation, and more. Not only do these life skills build on their strengths, but they also encourage community involvement, thoughtful decision-making, and independence so adults living with I/DD can manage their lives in positive and healthy ways.
