Meet Ben Mitchell: Making a Difference as a DSP
At RISE Services, Inc. Oregon, Ben Mitchell serves as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), a role that quickly became more than just a job for him. What began as a career opportunity grew into meaningful work that allows him to support and uplift individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Ben’s journey shows how DSPs make a real difference every day, helping people lead fulfilling and productive lives.
A Journey Rooted in Compassion and Growth
When Ben first learned about a career as a DSP, he was drawn to the field by his background in psychology and his desire to help others. He recalls, “I discovered DSP work…and I thought that that sounded like just a very unique and incredible opportunity to…dedicate the majority of my time to improving the lives of others.”
For Ben, joining RISE Services, Inc. Oregon was an easy decision, not because of pay or scheduling, but because of the commitment he felt from every staff member. From the start, it was clear that the team cared about more than just skills. “The energy that I felt off of RISE when I started was so welcoming, so warm, so inclusive, and I could tell… that everybody here really truly cared about what they were doing,” he says.
This inclusive and supportive atmosphere continues to inspire Ben as he serves as the RISE Services, Inc. Oregon’s In-Home Coordinator at our Eugene location.
The Work of a DSP
Direct Support Professionals at RISE Services, Inc. Oregon provide one-on-one support to children, adults, and families in our community. Daily responsibilities are diverse, ranging from skills training and mentoring to assisting with daily living activities like cooking and cleaning, to providing transportation and medication assistance. DSPs champion advocacy and support individuals as they build strong community connections.
In addition to hands-on work, DSPs benefit from RISE Services, Inc. Oregon’s comprehensive training program. Every DSP completes over 40 hours of pre-service training, covering important topics like the Oregon Intervention System (OIS), CPR/First Aid, and ongoing professional development.
