Holiday Tips: Supporting Friends Who Have a Family Member With IDD

The holiday season can be both joyful and demanding, especially for families of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). If you’re a friend of a family that includes an individual with IDD, your support and care can make a meaningful impact during this time. At RISE Services, Inc. Oregon, we’re committed to nurturing families and fostering understanding in communities across Oregon. Based on our experience, here are some helpful ways you can nurture your friends and family during the holiday season.

Understanding Unique Holiday Experiences

Every family celebrates differently, but families that include individuals with IDD might face unique situations. Routine changes, crowded gatherings, and sensory overload can make typical festivities challenging. As a friend, being mindful of these experiences is key to supporting families and showing you care.

Be Flexible: Invite families to gatherings, but let them know there’s no pressure to participate in everything. Being accommodating about routines, dietary needs, and activities is a great way to offer support.

Ask, Don’t Assume: Instead of guessing what a family might need, ask how you can be helpful. Sometimes, just listening is the best support.

Offer Respite: The holidays can be demanding for caregivers and foster families. Offering your time, maybe by assisting with child care or bringing over a meal, can provide much-needed rest.

Include, Engage, Adapt

When planning holiday events, it’s important to consider the needs of all your guests. By making small changes, you help foster a supportive atmosphere.

Invite Everyone: Ensure all family members, including those with IDD, are included in invitations and activities.

Modify Activities: Choose or adapt games and traditions so everyone can participate comfortably.

Be Mindful of Sensory Sensitivities: If you’re hosting, offer a quiet space for anyone who may need a break from noise or excitement.

Staying Engaged Year-Round

As a friend to a family of an individual with IDD, your understanding doesn’t have to end after the holidays are over. Your ongoing support is what truly nurtures individuals and families throughout the year.
