Begin a New Self-Care Practice This Holiday Season
Supporting individuals living with intellectual or developmental disabilities can involve unique complexities for family members, long-term caregivers, and those who work as Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). Practicing self-care on a regular basis can give you the rest and respite you need to improve your well-being and take better care of the children and adults you look after. At RISE Services, Inc. Oregon, we recognize the immense dedication and effort our DSPs put into their work each and every day. As a result, we highly encourage you to begin your own self-care practice with one of the activities listed below.
Time with Friends
The holidays are all about spending time with family and friends. Make self-care a priority this month by setting aside time to spend with friends. If you have a good friend that you haven’t seen in a while, consider reaching out to them. Maybe you and your best confidante haven’t had a chance to catch up because of busy schedules. Perhaps you can meet up with a new acquaintance for lunch or coffee. Be sure to make plans with a friend who will encourage you and refresh your spirit.
New Hobbies
Engaging your mind with a creative pursuit may be exactly what you need to relax, and the holiday break may be the best time to do so. Maybe you can turn something you enjoy into a new hobby or pastime. If you enjoy cooking, try some new recipes to share with your family or co-workers. If it’s been a while since you’ve explored other interests, pull up Pinterest or Google on your phone and see what you can find. You are bound to find something that piques your interest.
Physical Health
Improving your physical and mental health is a tried-and-true way to manage stress and care for your well-being. Physical activity looks different for everyone, so try a few different activities until you find something that you truly enjoy. There are hundreds of ways to focus on your physical wellness. From walking your dog or biking with friends to practicing yoga or signing up for strength-training classes, be sure to choose a physical activity that works with your schedule, your lifestyle, and your goals.
Don’t Forget to Take Care of Yourself Too
