A World of Possibilities: Celebrating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Oregon

Every March, Oregonians come together to observe National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. This month is about the right of every individual to live, grow, and thrive in the heart of their community.

At RISE Services, Inc. Oregon, we don’t just “provide services.” We’re in the business of creating a world where a diagnosis never dictates a person’s destination.

The Roots of the Movement

National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month was first proclaimed in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan. The goal was simple yet revolutionary: to increase public awareness of the needs and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities and to provide the “encouragement and opportunities” necessary for them to lead productive lives.

Decades later, Oregon continues to be a trailblazer in this mission, moving toward vibrant, community-based support systems.

How Does RISE Support Individuals with Developmental Disabilities?

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month reminds us that a “good life” is made up of many different threads. At RISE Services, Inc. Oregon, our programs are designed to support the whole person:

  • Residential & Supported Living: Whether it’s 24-hour support or just a few hours a week, we help Oregonians live safely and independently in homes they love.
  • Professional Foster Care: We connect individuals with nurturing host homes, ensuring that everyone has a stable, loving place to call home.
  • Day Programs and RISE Opportunity Centers: For those looking to build social skills, explore hobbies, or give back through volunteering, our community-based programs offer endless opportunities.
  • Behavioral Support: Our person-centered approach ensures that every individual has the tools they need to navigate the world with confidence and dignity.

2026 Theme: “A World of Outcomes”

The focus this year is on the tangible outcomes of inclusion. When people with I/DD are included in our schools, our workplaces, and our local festivals in Bend, Salem, or Portland, the entire community benefits.

We see the outcomes every day:

  • Stronger, more diverse neighborhoods.
  • Innovation fueled by unique ways of thinking.
  • A culture of empathy and mutual respect that defines the best of Oregon.

Let’s Build an Inclusive Oregon

“Awareness” is the starting line, but “Acceptance” and “Inclusion” are the finish line. This month, we challenge our Oregon neighbors to look past the disability and see the person—the artist, the neighbor, the friend, and the advocate. RISE Oregon is proud to be a partner in this journey. Whether it’s through finding the perfect home, mastering a new skill, or connecting with the community, we are here to ensure that every Oregonian with a developmental disability has the support they need to reach their full potential.
